Forget the entertainment form of hypnosis where volunteers from the audience are made to drop their inhibitions, and make fools of themselves for laughs.
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a therapeutic technique. In the deeply relaxed state of hypnosis, the subconscious mind is more open to suggestion and this allows change on a deeper level.
Hypnotherapy is a recognised form of therapy that can help you with a range of issues and can be particularly effective with:
Phobias, fears and anxiety
Coping with grief and loss
It isn’t a dangerous procedure, it isn’t brainwashing or mind control and you won’t be made to do anything embarrassing or that you don’t want to do.
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. Whilst the word ‘Hypnosis’ comes from the greek ‘Hypnos’, meaning sleep, the experience is more like day dreaming where you are able to bring yourself out of it at any time.
We often experience a trance state - for example driving to a familiar destination and arriving there without remembering the journey. It’s perfectly natural and you are completely in control.
Please don’t use hypnotherapy if you have psychosis and do check with your GP if you have any type of personality disorder. If you regularly use drugs or alcohol then hypnotherapy may not be an appropriate form of therapy.
