Emanating from Japan in the late 19th century, Reiki is a complementary therapy that is a method of spiritual healing through touch. The word Reiki means ‘universal’ (rei) ’life energy’ (ki), translating to ‘mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign’.
The theory of this therapy is that it targets energy fields around the body, promoting the flow and removing any blocks - in a similar way to acupuncture, acupressure or refloxology. There are also similarities with Chinese and Indian alternative therapies.
Benefits of Reiki include:
Encouraging the healing process
Easing of illness symptoms
Relief of emotional stress and tension
Promoting an overall sense of wellbeing
Supporting coping mechanisms
There are no harmful side effects and Reiki is widely accepted among healthcare professionals as a complementary therapy that can help lower stress, promote relaxation and reduce pain. Studies have also shown that Reiki is beneficial to cancer patients.
